River Rhine & people of Basel, Switzerland

Today in a Bengali daily (Kolkata based)  there is a news about the bank of River Hoogly (part of Ganges) to be made like the banks of Thames in London , Rhine in Basel, Switzerland and like some more. The daily has published the pictures of those river banks too but pics are too small and hard to make out how beautiful they are.

Recently I have returned from Basel Switzerland after living there (in Basel city) for more than a month. I have many pictures of Basel and the River Rhine, out of which few are posted here which shows the Bank of the river of Rhine, the road along the Bank etc. In the evening people usually sit there on the steps and pass time. They drinks and eats but they are very conscious about cleanliness and I have not seen anybody throwing any plastic or paper or anything on the bank or in the river or even on the road or public places. Of course sufficient numbers of dustbins are placed everywhere, even in the buses, trams and trains. People just use them. There sun sets at about 0930 -0945 45 Pm  ( in Jun) thats why most of the time people like to spend the evening on the bank of the river.

Between the Bank and the Houses, there is a beautiful cleaned road which can not be seen in this picture.The same has been shown below. They grow the tress beautifully to make a beautiful avenue.They take care of trees individually for each tree after plantation. .

Chief Minister of West Bengal is talking about beautification of the Bank / ghats of  river Hoogly of city Kolkata. We should welcome the idea and the positive attitude of the new Chief Minister of the state. In Europe, I think,  every city has got one river or other way we should say every city has grown up on the banks of a river. Every city is proud of their river and all monuments and developments, infrastructure for tourism have come up on the banks of the rivers. They make everything possible for the people of the city and for tourist attractions. We should also be considered lucky to have our Hoogly (Ganges) river but unfortunately nothing has been done for its beautification so far. Nobody has thought of this previously. I am sure, to some extend it can be changed but  that can not be compared with Rhine (at Basel Switzerland) because people of this country has to be changed and that is can not be done overnight.

Lake Geneva is 72 KM long and there are cities on its both banks. I have visited Geneva, Montraux and Vevey where the banks are so beautiful that you can not forget in your life time. First of all it is guarded with railings and there are gardens, seating arrangements, and very limited small restaurants. It is needless to say that there are sufficient trees throughout the bank which enhanced the beauty of the banks.
